Bad Bunny is set to take the stage for the Super Bowl Halftime Show on February 8, and the star named Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio previously shared how he got his stage name

Bad Bunny is set to perform during the Super Bowl Halftime Show, but with all the buzz around the star, not many know his actual name.

The Puerto Rican superstar was born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio on March 10, 1994. Now, 31 years later, he’s headlining one of the biggest stages in the world during Super Bowl LX on February 8. His performance is one of the most anticipated Halftime Shows ever, after the backlash he received from conservatives after he was named as the performer last September, and especially after he slammed ICE during his acceptance speech at the Grammy Awards just a week before the Super Bowl.

But how did Bad Bunny get his alliterative stage name? It all started with a childhood photo.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2018, Bad Bunny explained, “When I was a little boy in school, I had to dress up as a bunny, and there’s a picture of me with an annoyed face. And when I saw it, I thought I should name myself ‘Bad Bunny.'”

“It’s a name I knew would market well,” he continued. “A bunny is something so common that I thought to myself, every time someone sees one, they’ll remember my music.”

Jimmy Fallon later brought out the childhood photo during an interview on the Tonight Show in 2020, while speaking with the Latino star. “That was Easter day at school, and you know I was [wearing] that stupid costume,” Benito said to the late-night host.

“I was so mad,” he continued. “From this picture came my name, Bad Bunny. I don’t look mad, but I know, I remember I was mad.”

At the time, Bad Bunny was on the show after he was a guest during the 2020 Halftime Show starring Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. During that show, he performed his verse from Cardi B’s ‘I Like It’ with Shakira and part of his song ‘Callaíta.’

But this year, he’s taking center stage, and it’s unclear who else he’ll bring on stage with him. The star has been chastised for being chosen as the halftime show performer by many conservatives, but the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell defended his decision and said that Bad Bunny’s performance would “unite” the United States, even though Donald Trump said in an interview in January that he would not be attending the Super Bowl for many reasons, including the performer, szaying the halftime show will “sow hatred.”
