Just days after backing out of a high-stakes race to acquire Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming assets, Netflix has made a very different kind of bet: buying a small AI-driven filmmaking technology company founded by Ben Affleck.

The streaming giant said it has acquired InterPositive, a company that develops artificial intelligence-powered tools for movie production. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Affleck will join Netflix as a senior advisor.

Founded in 2022, InterPositive built an AI model designed to understand visual logic and editorial consistency while maintaining cinematic rules under real-world production challenges such as missing shots or incorrect lighting.

The acquisition comes at a time when the media industry is polarised, with some warming to the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking and storytelling. In contrast, others raise concerns that the technology could threaten creative jobs and intellectual property.

Affleck said the company built its tools with safeguards to ensure the technology supports, rather than overrides, creative decisions. “We also built in restraints to protect creative intent, so the tools are designed for responsible exploration while keeping creative decisions in the hands of artists,” he said.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria echoed that approach, saying new technology should expand what creators can do rather than replace them. “We believe new tools should expand creative freedom, not constrain it or replace the work of writers, directors, actors, and crews,” Bajaria said.
