Speaking at an event organised by industry body Nasscom, the secretary also said while the country will continue to be an open system allowing all major AI players, it will also develop its own AI infrastructure across large language models and data centres.
Democratisation of AI resources is a key aim for the Centre during the upcoming IndiaAI Impact Summit. The multilateral gathering of world leaders, set to be held in the national capital next month, will discuss global policy making in AI.
A key aspect of this will be to leverage India’s large population and technological resources to generate diverse use cases for AI, said Krishnan.
“It is legitimate for India to aspire towards becoming the use case capital for AI in the world. If the active startups are able to do it, that will make a difference. That will make AI available to a wide range of users,” he said.
Krishnan also said that India developing sovereign capabilities in AI and becoming strategically autonomous is in the larger global interest. “You are assuring the bold that there is one more production line, one more option available for many countries in the world to use,” he said.
Noting 20% of the global design workforce in semiconductors belongs to India, he said, “..Many of them are in global capability centres (GCCs) establishing here. Eventually this should convert into Indian intellectual property, designing chips, and those in turn becoming products that India can produce.”
Pax Silica
Earlier in the day, US ambassador designate to India Sergio Gor announced that New Delhi would be invited next month to join Pax Silica, a US-led strategic initiative aimed at securing critical supply chains spanning silicon, advanced manufacturing, and AI.
Krishnan lauded the move. “It’s a recognition of where India needs to be, and how it’s a reliable and trusted partner in important value chains,” he said.
While the new declaration is primarily an US effort to reduce reliance on Chinese-controlled critical minerals, the coalition also aims to create a reliable and secure ecosystem across the entire global technology supply chain, including energy inputs to advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and logistics.
