In Kerala, bus conductors often use the light-hearted line “busilu football kalikkan ulla sthalam indallo” — meaning, why crowd in when there is enough space in the bus. The sport in the saying is football, not cricket, and it has long been part of public humour about conductors. Now, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is adding a fresh sporting twist of its own — by turning to cricket.

Transport Minister KB Ganesh Kumar recently announced in Thiruvananthapuram that KSRTC will soon form its own cricket team for employees. The announcement came while he was presenting prizes at the KSRTC employees’ state-level cricket tournament organised by the Challengers Club.

“I have suggested to our CMD to form a cricket team for KSRTC. Earlier, we had volleyball and football teams, and even a cultural forum, but these were lost over time. Cricket is now the most popular game. We should select the best players from the teams that took part here,” Ganesh Kumar said.

It may be noted that certain state departments have built a strong reputation in sports. The Kerala Police and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) stand out, with KSEB’s women’s basketball and volleyball teams ranked among the finest in South India. The KSRTC’s latest sporting plan comes against this backdrop.
