In a significant gathering in West Bengal, more than 700 students from schools and universities came together for the ‘Youth Conclave on Climate Action’, focusing on safeguarding the fragile ecosystem of the Sunderbans. The conclave, organized by UNICEF, aimed to sensitize young people to the escalating impacts of climate change, especially in vulnerable regions like the Sunderbans.

The event commenced with the debut public screening of the documentary ‘Code Red Sunderbans’ by Suman Mukhopadhyay, triggering discussions among students about frequent cyclones and tidal surges affecting the region. Many participants highlighted the increase in soil salinity due to repeated inundations, adversely impacting agriculture.

West Bengal’s Disaster Management Minister, Javed Khan, addressed the gathering, promising new initiatives and a comprehensive master plan for the region, including speedboat ambulances for medical emergencies. Dr. Monjur Hossain from UNICEF reinforced the vital role youth can play in climate action, stressing the need for collective responsibility.
