A rusty bridge in North Delhi’s Roop Nagar, a crucial pedestrian shortcut, tragically collapsed on Tuesday morning, killing a woman. Although declared unsafe last year, residents continued its use, avoiding a 2-kilometre detour.
Despite barricades and walls to prevent access, locals routinely bypassed these measures. The bridge connected Roop Nagar and Gur Mandi, proving a vital link for commuters, students, and workers, who preferred its direct route despite visible damage and instability.
Local authorities and residential associations had previously raised safety complaints, but opposition hindered a complete closure. The Delhi government has announced an inquiry, and a citywide safety audit of similar structures has been initiated to prevent future incidents.
