Faced with mounting threats from urbanization, pollution, and climate change, West Bengal’s wetlands are the focus of a new conservation initiative launched on World Wetlands Day. The year-long project, titled ‘Jolarkotha,’ aims to enhance public participation and initiate collective action to protect these crucial ecosystems.

Spearheaded by ‘The Climate Thinker’ in collaboration with ‘Asar Social Impact Advisors,’ the initiative shines a spotlight on the communities dependent on wetlands. A new digital platform, ‘Voices for Wetlands,’ has been introduced to capture the experiences and traditional knowledge of fishers, farmers, and others who rely on these fertile landscapes.

According to Srijan Haldar of The Climate Thinker, the effort is about centralizing the voices of those impacted. By amalgamating scattered knowledge through stories, photographs, and research, the platform hopes to connect community realities with policy discussions, thereby enabling more effective ground-level policy outcomes.
