A new analysis reveals that heat risk in Indian cities is increasingly influenced by night-time and compound heatwaves. These occur when a daytime heatwave is followed by a night-time heatwave, posing a significant challenge not covered by existing Heat Action Plans (HAPs) and urban climate policies, which mostly focus on daytime heatwaves.

The study, co-authored by Kashif Imdad and published in the journal Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, stresses the need to address night-time heatwaves. Current plans, like those in Uttar Pradesh, have yet to recognize this emerging threat. Nearby research supports these findings, such as a study by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, indicating a rise in warm nights over the years.

To mitigate these risks, strategies including cool roofs, enhanced natural ventilation, and urban greenery are recommended. Tailored approaches are vital as local conditions vary widely. For instance, the deployment of removable cool roofs is suggested to adapt to seasonal temperature fluctuations, making them more effective in regions with severe seasonal weather variations.
