A devastating earthquake hit Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Friday with a magnitude of 5.9, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The tremors reached a depth of 177 km (110 miles) and were felt across the region including Pakistan and India.
Tragically, the National Disaster Management Authority confirmed eight fatalities and one injured child when a house collapsed in Kabul. Afghanistan frequently suffers from natural disasters, with earthquakes being particularly deadly. On average, around 560 people lose their lives annually due to such seismic events.
Perviously, a powerful quake struck in November with a magnitude of 6.3, resulting in at least 27 deaths and widespread property damage. The event underscores the high vulnerability and recurring challenges faced by communities in the region.
