A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 shook parts of northern and eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan on Friday night, resulting in the tragic loss of at least eight lives in Afghanistan, according to local authorities. The epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush mountains, causing widespread tremors across the region.
The earthquake’s impact was felt as far as the outskirts of Kabul, where Hafizullah Basharat, Kabul governor’s spokesman, reported eight fatalities within a single family due to a house collapse. With the epicenter 150 kilometers east of Kunduz, the rural and mountainous regions continue to face communication and emergency response hurdles.
In Pakistan, residents in Islamabad, Peshawar, and other cities experienced tremors, though no immediate damage or injuries were reported. Afghanistan’s Health Ministry has placed Kabul and provincial authorities on heightened alert. The region’s vulnerability to seismic events and the challenge of responding effectively in remote areas highlight ongoing disaster management issues.
