Rajya Sabha Member Kapil Sibal aimed criticism at the Indian government on Saturday, questioning its reliance on the US in the India-US interim trade agreement. Sibal pointed out the inconsistency with India’s avowed path toward ‘atmanirbhar’ or self-reliance, dubbing the current state as ‘Trump pe nirbhar’.
During a press conference, the former Union minister also queried whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fulfilled his duties following his inauguration of new government buildings, Seva Teerth, and Kartavya Bhawan 1 and 2. Sibal’s remarks come amid his ongoing critique of the government, which he accuses of surrendering India’s autonomy in foreign policy.
Sibal also highlighted the repercussions of aligning too closely with the US, recalling executive orders that threaten steep tariffs if India engages with Russian oil. He urged PM Modi to explain the trade deal in Parliament, emphasizing his belief that building relations should not undermine national principles.
