Nashik: Malegaon mayor Nasrin Shaikh on Tuesday claimed BJP’s former MP Kirit Somaiya, who does not have any constitutional post, was engaged in “cheap and dirty politics” during the month of Ramzan. Shaikh and deputy mayor Shan-e-Hind Nihal Ahmed, along with other members of the Malegaon corporation, stood at the entrance of the civic body’s office on Tuesday to ensure that Somaiya — who was in town — did not enter the building. Shaikh said, “When there was no elected body in Malegaon, Somaiya had a field day. He could come here whenever he wanted. He did whatever he wanted. He is indulging in dirty politics… politics of hatred. He does this every time there is a religious festival in Malegaon. Now we are observing Ramzan here. In the past too, Somaiya sought such occasions to spread hatred and defame the Muslim-majority Malegaon city,” claimed the mayor.Shaikh added that she has written a letter to municipal commissioner Ravindra Jadhav, asking him not to give any information to Somaiya until it is validated by the House.Deputy mayor Shan-e-Hind said, “Somaiya has alleged that delayed birth and death certificates issued by the corporation were fake and forged, and were given to Bangladeshis and Rohingyas for their rehabilitation. But the SIT investigations have nothing to prove his claims. This is a futile effort to defame Malegaon.”Somaiya, after meeting additional collector Devdatta Kekan and additional SP Tegbir Singh Sandhu on Tuesday, addressed the press. He claimed that all the people who are unable to provide evidence of their birth in the country are a security threat.“All 4,400 delayed birth and death certificates issued by the Malegaon civic body have been cancelled. None of the people have been able to give tangible evidence of their birth in India. Such people are threat to country’s security,” said Somaiya.“Them not being able to provide the certificates is enough for me to claim they are not Indians. They could be Pakistanis, Afganis, Bangladeshis or even Rohingyas,” he added.Among the applicants, there are about 300 Hindus whose certificates now stand cancelled. Somaiya said that since they are not able to prove their birth in the country, a case of cheating should be filed against them.Nikhil Pawar, the president of Amhi Malegaonkar Vidhayak Sangharsha Samiti, condemned Somaiya for his statements and defamation of Malegaon. “Somaiya should take the help of chief minister Devedra Fadnavis and union home minister Amit Shah to take action against the residents of Malegaon if they are found to be security threats. How can state and central govts, led by BJP, be silent in such a situation? We condemn Somaiya for his statements that defame the city and culture of Malegaon,” said Pawar.
