Political tensions have intensified in India as opposition parties criticised the government over reports of LPG cylinder shortages in several cities. The criticism comes after restaurant associations and businesses reported disruptions in the supply of commercial cooking gas.

Amid reported LPG shortages and opposition criticism of mismanagement, the Indian government invoked the Essential Commodities Act to boost production and ensure household supply, while global energy markets face pressure from the Middle East conflict.

The issue has emerged at a time when global fuel markets are under pressure due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has raised concerns about energy supplies across many countries.

Government Invokes Essential Commodities Act To Boost LPG Supply

To address the situation, the government invoked the Essential Commodities Act to ensure that domestic cooking gas remains available for households.

Under the directive, refineries and petrochemical plants have been asked to increase the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Authorities have also instructed companies to divert certain hydrocarbon streams into LPG production to strengthen supply.

The government has further ordered that natural gas supply to priority sectors should continue without interruption, based on their average consumption over the past six months.

Officials say these measures are intended to prevent disruptions in domestic LPG availability and maintain stability in the energy supply chain.

Opposition Leaders Accuse Government Of Mismanagement

Despite these steps, opposition parties have criticised the government, alleging that poor planning has contributed to the reported shortage.

Pramod Tiwari of the Indian National Congress said the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas was responsible for the difficulties people are facing in accessing cooking gas.

He also criticised a rule that requires consumers in many cities to wait 25 days before booking another LPG cylinder.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Chaturvedi from Shiv Sena (UBT) questioned the government’s preparedness despite earlier claims that India was ready to deal with disruptions in global fuel supplies.

Concerns Over Global Oil Supply Routes

Other opposition leaders raised concerns about the impact of the Middle East conflict on global energy routes.

Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party alleged that the government was misleading the public about fuel availability.

He pointed out that a large share of India’s crude oil imports pass through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by rising regional tensions.

Another Samajwadi Party leader, Awadhesh Prasad, warned that continued shortages could increase inflation and place additional pressure on the economy.

Reports Of Long Queues For LPG And Fuel

Mahua Maji of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha claimed that the situation is already affecting people in some cities.

She said residents in Ranchi have reported long queues outside petrol pumps and LPG distribution centres as people worry about future supply.

The leader urged the government to clarify its strategy for managing energy supplies during the ongoing global crisis.

Restaurant Industry Reports Severe LPG Disruptions

The hospitality sector has also reported significant challenges due to the shortage of commercial LPG cylinders.

Hotel and restaurant associations in cities like Chennai and Bengaluru have warned that many establishments could be forced to suspend operations if gas supply is not restored soon.

Industry groups say commercial LPG distributors have stopped delivering cylinders due to limited availability.

Restaurant owners have warned that the disruption could affect thousands of people who depend on eateries for daily meals, including students, office workers and hospital staff.
Growing Concern Over Energy Supply Stability
The debate over LPG availability highlights the wider impact of global geopolitical tensions on domestic energy supply.

While the government maintains that sufficient fuel stocks are available and steps are being taken to protect household consumers, opposition parties and industry groups continue to raise concerns about supply disruptions.

With the Middle East conflict ongoing and global energy markets under pressure, the situation remains closely watched by both political leaders and businesses across India.
