Former Janata Dal (United) leader KC Tyagi, who resigned from the party last week, joined the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) on Sunday.
He said there is no difference between the two parties, as both follow the ideals of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh and socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia.

The veteran socialist leader joined the RLD in the presence of party president Jayant Chaudhary, who welcomed him and said his entry would bring “new energy and strength” to the party.
Tyagi said he would now focus on politics in Uttar Pradesh and clarified that he has joined the RLD not with the ambition of becoming an MLA or MP but to see Jayant Chaudhary emerge as a leader in the mould of his grandfather, Chaudhary Charan Singh.
He also pledged to carry forward the latter’s vision and ideals during his association with the party.
Emphasising farmers’ issues, Tyagi said he would work to strengthen the causes championed by Charan Singh to ensure “prosperous farmers and a strong India.”
Responding to a question on the party’s preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, he said, “We want to make the Lok Dal so strong that an NDA government is formed once again in Uttar Pradesh.”
On whether he would contest the elections, Tyagi replied, “No. I have already been an MLA and an MP.”
Like the JD(U), the RLD is also an ally of the BJP-led NDA.
Notably a founding member of the JD(U), Tyagi did not participate in the party’s membership renewal drive, signalling his exit on March 17.
Associated with the party since 2003, he has held key positions, including chief national spokesperson and national general secretary.
Although he had been serving as a political adviser to the JD(U), his role had diminished over time, particularly after he was removed as national spokesperson more than a year ago. The party had also distanced itself from several of his statements in recent months.
