Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut sparked a fresh political row on Wednesday, March 18, after calling Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi a ‘tapori’ (vagabond). The actor-turned-politician further alleged that his conduct made women parliamentarians feel ‘uncomfortable’.

“We, the women, get very uncomfortable seeing the way he (Rahul Gandhi) conducts himself. He walks in like a ‘tapori’ and heckles those giving interviews,” she was quoted as saying by ANI.

Furthermore, she stated that Rahul Gandhi should observe the conduct and behaviour of his sister, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, “which is very good.”
“He should see the conduct and behaviour of his sister, which is very good. Rahul Gandhi himself is a shame,” Ranaut added.

Her remarks followed a controversy where Gandhi was seen having tea and biscuits at Parliament’s Makar Dwar entrance, an act criticised in an open letter by 84 former bureaucrats, 116 veterans and four lawyers, asking him to apologise.

The remarks triggered sharp rebuttals from opposition leaders.

Following the controversial remarks by Ranaut, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Wednesday defended Gandhi, stating that personal or political disagreements do not justify such ‘wrong’ allegations. She called it ‘funny’ to level such allegations against someone who comes from a family full of women in leadership.

In a conversation with ANI, she shared, “There could be personal or political disagreements, but saying something like this for Rahul ji is wrong. I have seen Rahul ji’s commitment towards the upliftment of women and respecting them.”

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate has also launched a sharp attack on Ranaut and alleged that there is a ‘bizarre competition’ within the BJP over making offensive statements.

In a conversation with reporters, she said, “Kangana has always been prone to making outlandish remarks; now that she has joined this race, she is spouting even more nonsense than usual. I do not wish to dig up her past, but judging by the nature of the statements she is currently making, she is in dire need of a psychiatrist, as her condition appears to be becoming incurable.”

Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat has also come forward to support Gandhi, stating that women see him as ‘brother’. “Rahul Gandhi is a person who respects women. The women see him as a brother. Kangana Ranaut uses such language in an attempt to become like Smriti Irani,” the MP said.

Meanwhile, Indian Youth Congress National President Uday Bhanu Chib called the ‘tapori’ remark shameful and accused Ranaut of lowering the level of Parliament.

“It is shameful to make such remarks about the country’s LoP, and from today itself, the youth will work in the Mandi Lok Sabha so that such MPs who hold such thinking, who harbour anti-national sentiments and make such statements, do not even enter Parliament, and so that the level of Parliament does not fall, we ensure that such people whose mental balance is disturbed do not come to Parliament,” he added.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore has also criticised Ranaut, stating that such statements were ‘laughable’ and alleged that she “follows a script.” “It’s laughable that Kangana Ranaut is making that script. She is always a script player. Whatever script is given, she will follow it,” he told ANI.

However, Bihar BJP President Sanjay Saraogi expressed his agreement with the remarks and said that even members of the Congress Party believe Rahul’s behaviour is not dignified in nature.

“She is saying the right thing. Today, not only Kangana Ranaut but also the leaders of the Congress Party think that Rahul Gandhi’s behaviour is not dignified, and yet, the seriousness with which he should approach matters, the seriousness that should be displayed, is not reflected in his demeanour. That is why Congress is in this state today,” the Bihar BJP President said.
