Finnish President Alexander Stubb was in New Delhi on Thursday for a state visit, where he and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi exchanged warm words, praising each other’s foreign policy approach.

“India and Finland believe in the rule of law, dialogue and diplomacy,” Modi said.

On the war in Ukraine, however, India and Finland are not fully aligned. India has continued to buy Russian oil and maintains close ties with Moscow.

Vladimir Putin made a high-profile visit to New Delhi last December.

According to Modi, Finland and India aim to strengthen their ties in trade, investment and technological cooperation. In his remarks, Modi highlighted Nokia phones, which he said once connected millions of people across India.

For his part, Stubb said the importance of India in foreign, security and trade policy is hard to overstate. For that reason, he said, it would be important for India to have a seat on the United Nations Security Council.
