Visakhapatnam: “Keep politics away from the Andhra University campus,” said governor and AU chancellor Dr S Abdul Nazeer while presiding over the 91st and 92nd combined convocation on Wednesday. Delivering the convocation address, he stressed that non-students should not be allowed to stay in hostels and that students must give an undertaking to the chancellor.AU vice-chancellor Prof GP Rajasekhar responded that the university would strictly follow these directions. “We pledge not to have politics on the campus. We will also ensure that non-residents are not accommodated, and we are committed to maintaining excellence,” he said.Highlighting AU’s 100-year legacy, the Governor recalled its founding in 1926 to serve the aspirations of the Telugu community in the Madras Province. He cited the contributions of CR Reddy, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Dr VS Krishna, Dr TR Sheshadri, and Prof Humayun Kabir, noting that AU has produced illustrious alumni including Nobel laureate Dr CV Raman and eminent statistician Prof CR Rao.“I urge students to approach life pragmatically, like a realist adjusting sails against the wind. Graduates should elevate themselves, cultivate confidence, and honour their alma mater’s legacy by making meaningful contributions to society,” he said.Honorary doctorates were conferred on Purnachandra Rao Saggurthi, vice-chairman of Bank of America and AU alumnus, and Dr Thallavajjula Patanjali Sastry, eminent Telugu author, environmentalist, and archaeologist. Best Research Awards were presented to Prof P Jagadeeshwara Rao (Geology) and Prof CNV Satyanarayana Reddy (Civil Engineering).Dr Saggurthi, speaking after receiving his honorary degree, said India is rapidly growing in the global economic system and has the potential to become the world’s third-largest economic power. He urged youth to develop skills to adapt to changing global conditions, noting Bank of America’s strong global position and projected net profit of $30.5 billion in 2025.Prof Rajasekhar added that AU should strive to achieve commendable progress in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as it transitions into its second century, moving forward with knowledge, integrity, innovation, and responsibility towards society.
