Brits planning holidays are being urged to do one thing before jetting off
Brits arranging holidays this spring are being told to check their passports straight away to prevent possible travel disruption. It comes as millions nationwide gear up for journeys during the hectic Easter period.
The alert was issued by HM Passport Office through a social media message on Tuesday. Officials said: “Planning spring or Easter travel? Check your passport now.”
They also pointed travellers towards the official government portal to start the procedure if a new passport is needed. “If you need to renew, go to: “https://www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport,” the post continued.
The UK Government recommends holidaymakers regularly check their passport is valid before arranging international trips. Representatives warn against securing any reservations until a valid passport is physically received.
A replacement passport will carry a different number from the previous one, potentially creating difficulties if travel bookings are made before receiving the document. Those who still have a burgundy passport displaying “European Union” on the front can keep using it until the expiry date arrives, with the design modification following Brexit not impacting the passport’s validity.
Travellers can submit applications to obtain, renew, replace or amend their passport online through the official government platform. Online applications also cost £12.50 less than postal submissions.
According to HM Passport Office, applicants require a debit or credit card to complete the online process. Travellers are also advised to review current processing times before submitting their application.
For those requiring a passport urgently, fast-track services are on offer. These include the Online Premium service and the one-week Fast Track option.
Holidaymakers requiring assistance with an online application can visit their local Post Office branch. Staff can take a digital photo and help complete the application through the digital Check and Send service, though this incurs an additional charge.
Paper passport application forms are also available to collect from Post Office branches. However, the government highlights that postal applications typically take longer than online submissions.
Officials recommend that verifying your passport now could spare travellers unnecessary stress nearer to departure. With the Easter holidays fast approaching, ensuring documents are valid could prevent last-minute travel complications.
