Google’s latest travel report points to four types of travellers that reflect how people have been travelling in the recent past.
Travel is no longer just a lifestyle choice; it now shapes how people see themselves.
Most people enjoy putting labels on habits and choices, whether it’s about food, work styles, or even star signs. Travel, too, has gradually become a reflection of who people are and what they value. While some chase excitement, others seek comfort, and many simply want a break that feels meaningful.
Google’s new report, Travel Rewired: Decoding the Indian Traveller, takes a closer look at how Indians travel today. It identifies four distinct types of travellers, each driven by different motivations, planning habits and ways of experiencing destinations.
Travellers Who Plan Trips To Collect Memories – Memory Makers
These travellers don’t just go on holidays to relax. They travel for special moments. This includes concerts, big sports matches, film locations, or festivals they have always wanted to see in person. For them, the trip has a clear goal. Most of them are from Gen Z. They often plan their trips around hobbies and interests.
As the report puts it, “They’re the ones chasing sunsets, stadium roars, festival confetti and once-in-a-lifetime ‘I was there’ moments.” They usually spend about a week planning and travel for longer periods, often more than 11 days. Many prefer international trips and like travelling with friends.
Travellers Who Love Comfort and Luxury – Globetrotters
These are frequent flyers who enjoy the full travel experience. Most are millennials living in big cities. They pay for their own trips and handle planning themselves. For them, comfort matters as much as the destination.
They spend time comparing hotels, flights, lounges, and food options. Planning often takes more than a week, and social media plays a big role in giving them ideas. Their trips are usually long international holidays with a partner, focused on comfort, good stays, and small luxuries.
Travellers Who Are New And Careful With Money – Novice Travellers
This group includes many first-time travellers, mostly young Gen Z women. They are excited to explore but prefer to keep costs low. They like ready-made packages and good deals. Planning is quick for them, with many bookings within a day. Their trips are usually short, around four to five nights, and they mostly travel with friends.
Travellers Who Go On Spiritual Journeys – Religious Pilgrims
Religious travel is growing across age groups. People of all generations visit places like Varanasi and Haridwar. Most travellers in this group are above 30 and often travel with family or friends. They focus on culture, faith, and shared time. These trips are budget-friendly and can be short or long, depending on plans.
Social media shapes every journey
Across all groups, one thing is common. Social media plays a big role in travel choices. Videos and creators help people decide where to go and what to do.
Shaurab Kapadia, Head of Travel and FoodTech, Google India, in a statement, said, “Travelling is now a form of self-expression, yet the path to booking is often fragmented. We are seeing our digital ecosystem simplify this complexity. YouTube is the inspiration hub, Search is the essential touchpoint for planning, with AI emerging as the critical enabler for travellers.”
