For many couples, what was meant to be a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon is now turning into a series of difficult choices. Ongoing global tensions and travel disruptions have made planning international trips more complicated, prompting couples to rethink destinations, budgets, and even the timing of their journeys.

Rising airfares and limited routes

With several flight paths no longer accessible, airlines have been forced to take longer routes, leading to higher operational costs. Reports indicate that ticket prices on India to Europe routes have increased by 17 to 33 percent. In some cases, fares have surged by as much as 80 percent. Longer travel durations and reduced connectivity have only added to the inconvenience.

As a result, many couples are cancelling or rescheduling their trips at the last minute. Safer and more accessible destinations are increasingly being preferred over long-haul international travel.

Major travel hubs face disruptions

The situation has been further complicated by temporary shutdowns at key aviation hubs earlier this month. Airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha saw disruptions, affecting travel plans across regions.

In India, couples are also reconsidering their itineraries. Some who had planned luxury experiences abroad, such as desert safaris in Dubai, have postponed their trips and requested changes to hotel bookings. Instead, they are opting for shorter getaways within the country, such as mini-moons at resorts in north-east India.

Others have chosen to delay travel altogether, particularly working couples who find it difficult to take extended leave from their jobs.

Industry observes shift in travel choices

Travel experts confirm that honeymoon travel patterns are changing. They explain that while airfare changes are common, the broader concern currently is the uncertainty created by global tensions. Couples and their families are becoming more cautious. Some are delaying their plans by a few weeks, while others are selecting destinations closer to home or easier to reach. There has been a noticeable decline in long-distance honeymoon bookings.

It’s also noted that approximately 20 to 25 percent of couples have either postponed or reconsidered their trips this month due to rising airfares and unpredictable schedules.

Ravi Gosain, President of IATO, says that travel agents are actively helping clients with rebookings and itinerary adjustments to reduce inconvenience. Many are also exploring alternative routes and airlines to keep travel plans viable.

Experts also highlights a growing sense of cautious adjustment among travellers. Couples still want memorable and indulgent experiences, but are now prioritising destinations that are easier and smoother to access.

Shift towards closer and easier destinations

With travel through the Gulf corridor facing restrictions, many couples are now looking towards eastern destinations. Industry insiders report a 10 to 12 percent increase in bookings to locations such as Bali, Thailand, and Vietnam, which continue to offer direct and relatively unaffected flight options.

Travel expert observes that destinations like Japan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and South Korea are gaining popularity among couples seeking meaningful cultural experiences instead of fast-paced multi-city trips.

At the same time, domestic tourism is seeing a rise. they note that while interest in international honeymoons remains high, many bookings are not materialising. Couples are increasingly choosing destinations within driving distance or within India. Hill stations and scenic locations such as Gangtok, Darjeeling, Pelling, Shimla, and Manali are seeing increased interest, while Kashmir is gradually regaining popularity.

Travel advice for couples

Travel experts advise couples to be mindful of insurance policies. Standard travel insurance may not cover disruptions caused by war or unrest. Opting for a “Cancel for Any Reason” policy, though more expensive, can provide flexibility and partial refunds even if plans change due to uncertainty.

Flexibility in destination choice is also key. If initial plans become complicated, countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Mauritius offer visa-free travel for Indian citizens and can be booked even at short notice.

For those facing flight disruptions, it is recommended to monitor airline updates closely and avoid cancelling bookings prematurely. Waiting for official rebooking or refund options can help avoid additional losses.

If international travel seems too complicated, couples are increasingly choosing luxury experiences within India. Destinations like Srinagar offer scenic landscapes similar to European settings, the Andaman Islands provide water villa experiences comparable to the Maldives.
