Planning Char Dham Yatra 2026? Dates, Registration, Routes And Rules Explained

The Char Dham Yatra, often regarded as one of Hinduism’s most sacred pilgrimages, will begin on April 19, 2026, coinciding with the festival of Akshay Tritiya. Every year, lakhs of devotees make their way to the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand to forge a deeper connection with their faith and seek blessings for themselves and their families.

If local legends are to be believed, it is said that in the 8th century, Adi Shankaracharya had started the Char Dham Yatra, which covers four famous temples in Uttarakhand – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, which are collectively known as the four divine abodes (char dhams).

What is the Char Dham Yatra and why is it important?

The Char Dham Yatra symbolises a spiritual return to four sacred sources of life and liberation. Each shrine has its own importance: Yamunotri and Gangotri honour the origins of the Yamuna and Ganga rivers, while Kedarnath and Badrinath are dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. It is said that every Hindu should complete the circuit of these char dhams in Uttarakhand to attend moksha and peace.
