A new wellness center that just opened at a Hawthorne elementary school will expand health care for the entire campus community and residents.

The Venice Family Clinic and the Hawthorne School District hosted a grand opening on Wednesday, March 25, for the HSD Health and Wellness Center at Zela Davis Elementary School.

The school-based health and wellness center will expand access to medical and mental health care for Zela Davis’ 6,900 students, their families, school staff and residents throughout Hawthorne, officials said in an announcement.

The new facility is the second school-based health center in the Hawthorne School District, created in partnership with Venice Family Clinic. HSD also already operates the Maxine Waters Health and Dignity Center at York School.

By offering care directly at campuses, according to the district’s website, these centers make it easier for families to receive important health services close to home and school.

Both centers welcome patients with Medi-Cal, Covered California or no insurance at all, the website says, ensuring that more families can receive the care they need.

Zela Davis Elementary, 13435 Yukon Ave., was named in 1964 after the first woman principal in the Hawthorne School District.
