Health Update: Health Update: Unison Health to open ‘Child Wellness Campus’ in Toledo with $2.6M state award – What Experts Say– What Experts Say.
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Unison Health has been selected by Governor Dewine’s office and the Department of Children and Youth as one of six facilities in Ohio to become a Child Wellness Campus, a new initiative aimed at keeping children close to their families while providing behavioral health care.
The campus, located at Unison’s Cherry Street location, will house outpatient behavioral health services in the front half of the building. The back half will be converted into a residential space with 12 beds for children in need.
The residential units are for children ages 6 to 17 who are involved with children’s services and have complex behavioral needs requiring a higher level of care.
“The goal is to keep the child close to their family so it’s the least disruptive for them as possible,” said Amy Kobold, Chief Operating Officer of Unison.
The facility will provide up to 30 days of short-term stabilization.
The residential site will serve 24 counties in Northwest Ohio. Kobold said the campus is intended to fill a gap for children who are between facilities.
“Sometimes when you are removed from the home in an emergency situation, there’s not a bed available that they need readily, so they may be waiting in the emergency room for two to three days for their next appropriate level of care,” Kobold said.
Kobold said children in the region are currently being sent out of state for care.
“Which is incredibly disruptive for the family and can be traumatizing for the youth,” she said.
The State of Ohio is providing $2.6 million for major renovations to the facility. The space previously operated as a detox center but has been vacant for several years.
“We’ll be upgrading all the appliances, new flooring, new paint — it will look like an environment a child will want to be at, bright colors, safe furniture, things like that,” Kobold said. The funding will also cover startup costs, including staffing and training.
Adult outpatient services currently operating in the front half of the building will be moved to another location when the changes are implemented, making the entire building dedicated to behavioral health services for children.
The campus is set to open in January.
