NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The City of North Charleston opened the doors to a new space aimed at improving health and quality of life in one of the city’s historic neighborhoods.

Residents were given a first look at the new Carner Avenue Wellness Campus at the grand opening on Thursday. The facility will serve as a long-term hub for health, wellness, and community connection in North Charleston, according to city leaders.

“This community right here has been wanting and needing something,” explained Recreation Director Sedric Webber.

The Carner Avenue Wellness Campus represents government and business working together to deliver neighborhood resources to the heart of the North Charleston community.

“It’s huge, because it shows you how government and business all work together for the betterment of the citizens in the city of North Charleston,” explained Mayor Reggie Burgess. “And it’s going to benefit the people in this community.”

The Carner Avenue Senior Center is a brand-new wellness facility that caters to everyone.

“It’s a lot to offer where the community will be able to take advantage of,” Webber said.

A community room, exercise space, multi-use courts, event spaces, and more.

The project was made possible with funding from the South Carolina Ports Authority as part of the agreement to develop the old Navy base. With focuses to improve quality of life for residents in the area.

“At the end of the day, it’s about the people. That’s what I really want to thank them tremendously for,” Mayor Burgess said. “For not giving up on the citizens, they did a great job, and we thank them.”

The impact is expected to reach North Charleston and beyond, with the goal of setting up the next generation for success.

“It’s not just the specific community here, it’s going to be the community at large, because we are a diverse community,” Webber said. “The City of North Charleston and we want to serve everybody.”

The campus will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Saturday, and closed on Sundays.
