City of Lauderhill commissioner Melissa P. Dunn said in a news release that the effort reflects a growing awareness of the importance of personal health.
“I believe that people care about their health now more than ever because life is short and we really have to make every single second count and this body is the only body we have,” she said.
She also pointed to ongoing health challenges in the community and the need for continued focus on wellness.
“Unfortunately in the city of Lauderhill, we have a high incidence of diabetes and other chronic disease and so for me it’s critical that our residents eat better, move more and really take care of their health and well-being including their mental wellness and their financial wellness,”Dunn said.
The Get Active Lauderhill campaign, led by Dunn, launched Jan. 31 and encouraged participants to take simple, consistent steps toward improving their physical, emotional and overall well-being.
Organizers said the initiative emphasized accessibility, community engagement and sustainable habits for residents of all ages and fitness levels.
The event concluded with the community-wide 5K Run/Walk event Saturday at Lauderhill Sports Park at 7500 W. Oakland Park Blvd.
