Existing and emerging leaders from Carbon and Emery counties spent a day exploring Community Health and Wellness during the January Experience Day of the Eastern Leaders Academy (ELA). Participants learned from health professionals across the counties and heard about the ways they help the community stay healthy.
The group explored many aspects of health, including physical, mental, social and extended care, and learned about health at all stages of life.
Representatives came from a variety of organizations, including hospitals, public health departments, health centers, fitness programs and recovery advocacy groups. Their presentations and discussions gave the group a well-rounded perspective on health and wellness in the region.
Reflecting on the day, Larry Jensen, one of the founders and a member of the ELA Board, emphasized the value of hearing directly from those serving the community.
“I was impressed by the passion each entity showed for the work they do,” Jensen said. That passion carried through the day and resonated with participants.
Participants learned ways to care for their own physical, mental and emotional well-being, building skills that help them lead effectively. They also visited a local nursing home, where they joined residents in an activity, experiencing firsthand a different perspective on community care.
Jaime Cowdell, an ELA Board member, spoke about the impact of the experience and the importance of understanding local resources.
“This day reminded us how important it is to understand the resources right here in our community so we can better support ourselves and others,” Cowdell said. “When we take the time to learn, connect and start caring for our own health, we’re better equipped to help those around us.”
Looking ahead, the ELA group will travel to Salt Lake City in February for a day at the Legislative session, continuing their hands-on approach to learning about leadership and community impact.
