Health Update: Health Update: Coaches Urge Fitness & Wellness in Nigeria for Better Health – What Experts Say– What Experts Say.

Wellness coaches and health advocates have urged Nigerians to pay closer attention to physical fitness and overall wellbeing, linking the country’s low life expectancy to the neglect of healthy lifestyles amid prevailing economic challenges.

The call was made at the 2026 Eden Wellness Festival held in Lagos on Saturday, where participants engaged in a range of fitness and recreational activities aimed at promoting healthier living.

Convener of the festival and Chief Executive Officer of Eden Lifestyle, Maje Ayida, said many Nigerians often overlook their health due to the pressure of daily survival.

According to him, prioritising personal wellness remains one of the most practical ways to cope with weak healthcare systems and the demands of everyday life.

“The life expectancy of the average Nigerian is embarrassingly low. The only way we can push back from failing healthcare systems, poor infrastructure and the daily challenges we face is to prioritise our wellness,” Ayida said.

He added that the government also has a critical role to play in encouraging healthier lifestyles, recommending increased public awareness campaigns, improved access to sporting facilities, and the development of affordable gym spaces across communities.

Ayida further advocated for better urban planning, including the construction of pedestrian-friendly roads and improved walking safety to encourage more active living.

Fitness expert Kemen Fitness noted that many Nigerians prioritise financial pursuits at the expense of their health, often postponing wellness until later in life or after the onset of health challenges.

He explained that structured wellness programmes and professional guidance can help individuals strike a balance between work and personal health.

Coordinator at Eden Lifestyle Gardens, Tracey Obu, said the festival featured a variety of activities designed to integrate physical exercise with mental wellbeing.

According to her, participants took part in sessions such as yoga, cycling, boxing, volleyball, dancing, skipping, and karate.

Obu described the turnout as encouraging, noting a growing interest among Lagos residents in adopting healthier lifestyles through regular exercise and recreational engagement.

One of the participants, Kehinde Razak, praised the organisers, describing the experience as both refreshing and motivating.

“It has been really amazing. I have gained more strength and explored different aspects of sports and fitness. I would love to come again,” he said.

Razak added that he hopes to become an instructor in the future or pursue a path that would enable him to help others improve their fitness levels.
