A woman in Tennessee thought she had come across the most heartbreaking of discoveries in her local thrift store.

Hannah Peters from Nashville shared a video to TikTok of what she described as “the saddest thing I’ve ever seen at Goodwill.” The video shows her looking through a series of family photos that had seemingly been donated to the store.

Peters’ video, posted under the handle @whatshannahinto, quickly went viral. At the time of writing it’s been viewed 8.7 million times. However, much of the attention has focused not on the heartbreaking nature of her discovery but the identity of one woman in the photos.

Gen Z Thrifting

Thrifting is a popular pastime for a certain demographic of Americans today. Eighty-three percent of Gen Z consumers either thrift or wish to, according to statistics compiled by Capital One Shopping.

While some will scour the shelves and racks of thrift stores far and wide in hope of unearthing a bargain, Peters says she just it for the love of browsing random things. “I love finding unique or nostalgic items, so I tend to take my time and look through everything,” Peters told Newsweek.

It was curiosity that first led her to the photos. “I first noticed the photos while flipping through some frames and albums,” Peters said. “I just felt a sense of sadness seeing what looked like personal family photos sitting on a Goodwill shelf. It felt like something that wasn’t meant to be there.”

When Peters posted her video about the photos on TikTok she admits she “didn’t know who they were of, at that time.” That quickly changed though, with eagle-eyed fans flocking to the comments section on the video to reveal that one of the women in the pictures was none other than Grammy award-winning musician and actress Jill Scott.

When this was made clear to her, Peters decided to make it her mission to get the photos back to Scott. “I felt a strong responsibility to return them,” Peters said. “I shared a video in hopes of reaching the right people, and eventually I was able to send them to her team so they could be returned safely.”

Jill Scott’s Response

Peters ended up shipping the photos to Scott’s manager and business partner Shawn Gee. In the meantime, Scott took to X to confirm the pictures were hers and explain a little more about how they got there. “How does one’s personal pictures end up in a Goodwill? Welp, moving to a new home. My mommy moved,” she wrote. “We’re all grateful to get the pics back. I’ll let you know when they arrive. Thanks again.”

When Scott’s mom was moving, she accidentally donated a series of photos to Goodwill along with other items. Thanks to Peters’s inquisitive nature, however, they have been reunited with Scott and her family.

“I’ve always been a very observant and empathetic person,” Peters said. “I naturally take time to notice the stories behind the things I come across, and that’s something I’ll continue to carry with me.”

Long may her thrift store browsing continue.
