Goldie Hawn says acting and performing is an inherited skill for her daughter, Kate Hudson.
Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of a Q&A tied to Hudson’s new movie Song Sung Blue, Hawn said acting, for her daughter, is “instinct.”
“It’s instinct. It isn’t learning,” Hawn, 80, said at the event, held Tuesday, January 13 at the AMC The Grove 15 theater in Los Angeles. “We all live together. We’re a family together. And we have genetics that are very similar.”
Hawn continued: “All of us, we see somebody in here and I look at Ryder and I see Oliver, [Hudson’s sons] and the kids. But I don’t think that there’s…We learn by example. We don’t learn by oration, rhetoric, none of that.”
“Katie’s obviously come from two people who make movies, and with that, you see how we behaved,” Hawn added of Hudson, 46.

Hudson herself added that her own acting skills have been most informed by those she’s worked with on films and in television, saying, “I think it’s also more about the set experience for me as a kid growing up than it is maybe about…Because we never got to work together. And I think I’ve learned the most from people that I’m actually studying with and working with.”
Hawn also shared with PEOPLE that watching Hudson in Song Sung Blue left her in tears, saying, “We all cried in unison.”
Hawn added that Hudson — who comes from a Hollywood dynasty, being the daughter of actress Hawn and raised by her mom’s partner Kurt Russell — “never stops to surprise me or any of us with her talent.”
In the film, Hudson and Hugh Jackman play the real-life couple Claire and Mike Sardina, who were part of the Milwaukee-based Neil Diamond tribute act Lightning & Thunder, in the film Song Sung Blue.
The movie, which premiered on Christmas Day, is based on the 2008 documentary by the same name that follows the band’s early days and Claire and Mike’s relationship.
