Mzansi’s favourite dancing uncle, Uncle Don, whose joyful love for house music earned him a cameo in Drake and Gordo’s “Healing” music video, has revealed exactly how much he was paid for his appearance.
Speaking during a TikTok interview with creator Yungwman, Uncle Don shared that the total value of his deal came to around R300 000. When asked directly how much he made from the music video, he answered, “In total, I think it came up to 300 000.”
He went on to explain how the amount added up. According to Uncle Don, the initial offer presented to him was R50 000. However, things changed as the process went on.
“Towards the end, they decided to give me a car,” he said, referring to the VW Polo Vivo that was gifted to him and his family in the now-viral documentary-style video.
When the value of the car was added to the cash payment, the total came to R300 000.
He added that, for him, the amount was more than enough. Uncle Don also admitted that when he first received the message about the opportunity, he did not believe it was real.
“I thought it was a hoax, most definitely,” he said, explaining that he only continued engaging because he had the time and wanted to see how far it would go.
What started as something he assumed was fake became a life-changing moment.
The “Healing” video, shot in Dududu in KwaZulu-Natal, followed Uncle Don through his everyday routine. Viewers were introduced to his long walks to work, his love for music, and the quiet prayers he made for a car so his wife would not have to walk long distances.
The emotional ending, where a brand-new Polo Vivo is revealed to the family, left many viewers happy for him.
“I didn’t expect it to be that much,” he said, adding that it was a lot for him and something he never imagined would come from posting dance videos online.
Since the music video, Uncle Don has been slowly stepping into a new chapter of music curation. He shared that he is learning how to DJ, though he’s emphasised it’s not just about pressing play.
He describes it more as curating, understanding how songs speak to each other and how music can carry a feeling from one moment to the next.
On TikTok, he regularly posts clips of himself practising, learning transitions and spending time around prominent DJs who inspire him. He has also been attending events, taking in the atmosphere and observing how DJs move a crowd.
Uncle Don has openly spoken about how challenging and intimidating the process has been, especially starting something completely new at 50.
Now he’s focused on what comes next. He shared that there’s still more to come from him.
