Pop star Britney Spears has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in California, as the police radio recording reveals she was swerving and speeding.

Page Six reports that the Toxic singer’s black BMW sedan was being driven erratically “in and out of lanes … speeding” about 9.30pm on March 4.

“Can we send all units down towards this area please,” an officer said in the call, as other officers could be heard responding, the outlet reports.

Spears was arrested by the California Highway Patrol in Ventura County. She is booked to appear in court on May 4.

Her representative Cade Hudson told Page Six the incident was “unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable”.

“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” he said.

“Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

He added that Spears’ loved ones would come up with an “overdue needed plan” to improve the troubled pop star’s well being.

“Her boys (Sean Preston and Jayden James) are going to be spending time with her.”

TMZ reported Spears was arrested at 9.30pm local time and detained by the sheriff’s department about 3am. She was released from jail about 6am.

Spears regained control of her multimillion-dollar fortune and her personal affairs when a conservatorship previously run by her father Jamie Spears was terminated in November 2021.

Her online behaviour, such as posting bizarre videos of herself gyrating in skimpy clothes and bearing knives, has alarmed fans in recent years.

She posted a series of wild dance videos in the days before her arrest before her Instagram account was deactivated.
