Trevor Oakes, one of the founders of 1970s group Showaddywaddy, has died after a long illness

Trevor Oakes, one of the founding members of 1970s sensation Showaddywaddy, has passed away, the band confirmed today. The musician died peacefully last month following “a long illness”, according to the group’s former frontman Dave Bartram, who now serves as their manager.

Paying tribute, he said: “Trevor was a unique character and a dedicated professional, without whom the band would never have quite scaled the dizzy heights we seemed destined to achieve.

“He was also a caring and affectionate family man, with a mischievous sense of humour, which will be sadly missed by all those dear to him.

“I could write a book about the incredible memories we’ve shared over the p

ast fifty-seven years, but most of all I thank him from the bottom of my heart for his unwavering friendship.”

Trevor is understood to have departed the band – renowned for hits such as Under The Moon Of Love – in May 2009 at the age of 62 due to health problems, reports the Mirror.

Showaddywaddy came into being in 1973 following the merger of two Leicester-based groups, Choise and the Golden Hammers. Trevor had been part of Choise, performing alongside Dave Bartram, Al James, and Romeo Challenger.

The newly-formed outfit went on to make their mark performing classic tracks from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as their own compositions. Showaddywaddy also triumphed on New Faces, the era’s equivalent of Britain’s Got Talent.
