The BBC Radio 2 presenter had previously opened up about another incident during his time with the broadcaster that he would have fired himself for

Scott Mills previously admitted “I would’ve sacked me” after turning up to work intoxicated before being dismissed by the BBC. The breakfast show presenter was let go by the broadcaster over an allegation concerning his personal conduct.

The BBC confirmed on Monday March 30 Mills had been dismissed after he was initially removed from the airwaves the previous Tuesday. The broadcaster referenced “personal conduct” when they removed him from his position.

The 53-year-old has remained silent on his recent dismissal, but previously acknowledged his struggle with alcohol sometimes resulted in him presenting while drunk. In the past, he confessed this is something he would have fired himself over.

Mills previously revealed how he grappled with alcohol abuse following the death of a partner, who passed away from a drug overdose. He described how devastating it had been during a 2012 interview with Now Magazine. “I was 26 and we spent every minute together…It was truly awful.”

He continued he took up smoking after learning of the death and would then “wake up in the evening and drink two bottles of wine or a bottle of spirits in front of the TV”. He described it as a “way to escape”.

Reflecting on an occasion when he went on air while intoxicated, Mills said: “That could have been a massive f*** up for me. Even I would’ve sacked me. But thank God for Radio 1 – they knew about Mitch and why I was having a bad time.”

Mills was abruptly removed from his breakfast slot on BBC Radio 2 last Tuesday, with Gary Davies stepping in as his replacement. The decision was reportedly communicated to him over the weekend.

In a statement, the BBC said: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”

Mills had taken over from Zoe Ball on the breakfast show in 2025, describing it as a ‘dream come true’ at the time.

He told listeners: “It feels ever since recording my first shows as a kid for an audience of one, my mum, all roads since have led to this amazing opportunity.”

He added: “It really is a lifelong dream come true to follow in the footsteps of Sir Terry, Chris and Zoe to be the new presenter of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show.”

The news of Mills’ departure was revealed to BBC staff on Monday when Lorna Clarke, Director of Music, issued a statement.

It read: “I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the Breakfast show, and the BBC. I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock.”

Clarke felt it was important to personally share the news with staff due to the huge number of people Mills has collaborated with across various programmes over the years, including on Radio 1, 5Live, Radio 2 and TV.

Mills had been at the BBC since 1998.
