Jack Whitehall and Jorja Smith have been confirmed as the next host and musical act on Saturday Night Live UK, helming Sky’s comedy cabaret the weekend after Riz Ahmed is joined by musical guest Kasabian on the 4 April.
On Saturday 11 April, Whitehall will helm the show and take part in a number of sketches before Smith takes to the stage. This will be the last episode before the series takes a one week hiatus, returning on 25 April.
The viewership has been steady for the late night comedy series, with its first episode bringing in 226,000 viewers, though the second episode drew 205,000. But the sketches have still proven to be popular outside of overnight ratings, with one sketch currently at 1.8 million viewers on YouTube.
Earlier this month, audiences were introduced to SNL UK’s inaugural cast, which consists of: Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shep, Emma Sidi and Paddy Young – and they’re proving to be a hit.
Radio Times caught up with Taskmaster host Alex Horne, who delivered his verdict on the first episode of SNL UK.
“I don’t know what the British public wants,” he said in an exclusive chat at the Royal Television Society Awards. “I don’t think the British public knows what it wants, but as soon as it sees it, it goes, ‘Oh yeah, it’s good.'”
He continued: “I think there was a lot of scepticism before SNL UK started and I think within the first minute everyone went, ‘It’s OK. It’s gonna be OK.’ It’s great!”
Horne added that he is looking forward to watching the upcoming episodes, sharing that he is most excited about seeing “the dynamic between the cast”.
He told Radio Times: “They are genuinely an exciting bunch of people who people think of as new, but they’re not, they’re so experienced. They’ve done Edinburgh for years. I can’t wait to see what they come up with on the Monday and put on the Saturday.”
Saturday Night Live UK continues on Saturday 4 April at 10pm on Sky One and NOW.
