Sara Foster is looking back at her date with one of Hollywood’s suavest leading men — but it was far from a ticket to paradise.

The man in question? George Clooney, who Cindy Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber, thought would be perfect for the Nobody Wants This producer.

“Do you guys know that I got set up with George Clooney like 30 years ago and it was such a blah?” Foster, 44, revealed to her cohost and sister Erin Foster on Thursday’s episode of The World’s First Podcast. “Sorry, had to say it.”

Erin was understandably floored that she hadn’t known this information, asking her sister to clarify immediately: “Wait, sorry, you went on a date with him?”

“Rande and Cindy tried to set me up with him, like, when I was 24 maybe?” Sara replied. “And the four of us met and it was just such a hard no. You didn’t know that?” (Clooney and Gerber are friends and business partners who co-founded Casamigos Tequila.)

Erin confirmed that it was indeed news to her, and Sara elaborated. “I remember just thinking, ‘Oh, he is so old,'” she said. “I always say that when I see these young girls dating older guys. Like, yes, of course, sometimes it makes sense, and it’s all the things. [But] I’ve never understood a 19-year-old that’s into a 40-year-old. I just always thought that was so weird.”

Sara then took it a step farther, adding that she was “offended” that Crawford and Gerber tried to set her up with Clooney, who is now 64, because he “felt so old” to her.

“I’m sure George Clooney is a nice guy, but I just remember it being the four of us sitting there and thinking like, ‘I’m gonna die, like I’m gonna die,'” she said, noting that the date came at a time when she was “so sad” over an ex-boyfriend. “Then, here’s this one, who just feels like a grandpa. It was depressing. I was so depressed.”

To her credit, Sara emphasized that she wasn’t trying to offend Clooney and that he didn’t seem that excited by their date either. “I also think it wasn’t George being like, ‘Oh, set me up with Sara Foster.’ I think it was more like Rande and Cindy being like, ‘We know someone great,'” she explained. “I don’t think he was that into it either. I started crying about my ex to him. So I think he was like, ‘This chick’s not okay.'”

Erin joked that her sister was “the only one on the planet” who would be bummed out by a date with Clooney — whom she described as the “heartthrob of America.”

Sara eventually wed former tennis player Tommy Haas in 2006. The pair had two daughters, Valentina and Josephine, before calling it quits in 2024. Clooney has been married to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, now Amal Clooney, since 2014. The couple share twins Alexander and Ella, whom they welcomed in 2017.

Although the Jay Kelly star probably wouldn’t love to be remembered as seeming like ‘a grandpa’ when he was in his 40s, he did recently reveal that he’s shifting his career priorities as he ages.

While on the press run for Noah Baumbach’s latest project, in which he plays an aging Hollywood legend in a bit of winking metafiction, Clooney declared that he feels no need to “compete with 25-year-old leading men” at this stage in his career. “We always look back as we get older and go, ‘I wish I’d spent more time with the family,'” he told Netflix, the studio behind Jay Kelly. “You never go, ‘I wish I spent more time working’ — unless you have a really crappy family.”

“I’ve been trying to go the route Paul Newman did: ‘Okay, well, I’m not kissing a girl anymore,'” he added of his reasoning in a recent interview with Daily Mail. “When I turned 60, I had a conversation with my wife. I said, ‘Look, I can still play basketball with the boys. I play with 25-year-old guys… I can still hang. I’m in shape. But in 25 years, I’m 85 years old. It doesn’t matter how many granola bars you eat, that’s a real number.'”
