It all started this week when Rumer posted an Instagram Reel about life as a single mom to her 2-year-old daughter, Louetta, whom she shares with her ex-boyfriend, Derek Richard Thomas.

In the reel, Rumer was surrounded by text listing the various tasks she juggles as a single mom, including “meal prepping,” “working out,” and “planning afterschool activities.” She captioned the post: “The todo list in never ending. I need a nap and a duvet day asap.”

Later that day, per People, Rumer reshared the post to her story with a follow-up message to critics. “Just had to clarify since it seems there are quite a few uninformed and rude people in my comments on this post,” she wrote. “I work 4 different jobs to provide for my daughter. I am the sole provider for her.”

She continued: “I don’t live off a trust fund or get money from my parents. Most of the time I don’t have help with her. So how about y’all pause before you judge and assume.”

But it didn’t end there. In another follow-up story, Rumer shared a screenshot of a message from a fan, who accused her of “not acknowledging” the privilege of having a “backup” plan should she “get into financial trouble.”

“Your family is not going to allow you to fall into serious debt that would lead you to homelessness, for example,” the fan wrote. “That backup is something a lot of people don’t have. And not acknowledging that makes those without it feel that your privilege comes across as arrogance and as if you take that for granted. Yes, you have all those things listed on your mind, but most other people have the added stress of making sure they are able to make rent and bills each month coz if they don’t they’d be on the street.”

In response to this, Rumer shared a longer message, acknowledging that there seemed to have been “a misunderstanding about what I was actually saying” in her previous posts.

“I am very aware that I have privileges in my life that many people don’t, and I don’t take that for granted,” she said. “I know there are realities I will never fully experience, and I respect that. But this particular post wasn’t about privilege or comparing circumstances, and it feels like people are assuming I was ignoring that when that wasn’t the conversation I was trying to have.”

Even though her parents reportedly have a combined net worth of over $400 million, Rumer said she doesn’t live her life treating them as a “backup plan,” and instead takes pride in providing for herself and Louetta.

“At the same time, I think we can hold two truths at once. People’s lives look different, and none of our experiences exist in a vacuum,” she wrote. “Just like someone with a stable job and housing might still struggle in ways that are real to them, even if their situation is different from someone facing much more severe hardship elsewhere in the world, we all move through different layers of reality. Acknowledging that difference doesn’t mean we can’t also talk about what we share.”
