Nathan revealed he’s trying to bring back a ‘Firefly’ animated reboot series, and he asked fans for help online.
Nathan Fillion is sending out a major request—and his fans are here to answer the call.
Folks know Nathan for his role as John Nolan on the hit ABC drama The Rookie, with season 8 currently airing every Monday night. But back in the day, Nathan starred in the sci-fi series Firefly, where he portrayed Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, the captain of the ragtag spaceship Serenity. The show followed Mal and his crew as they tried to survive a totalitarian regime in space. And although the series was cancelled after just one season in 2002, Firefly continues to have a legion of fans hoping for a reboot.
So, is there a chance for Firefly to return to TV? As Nathan (along with former co-stars Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Adam Baldwin) revealed in a video on Instagram on March 15, he is trying to revive the show by bringing it to an animated format. But as he also noted in the clip, he’s going to need some help from the fans to bring Firefly back to life.
“The word is out. To keep Firefly flying, we need a home,” the caption read. “And for that, we need you. Like this post, comment on this post, repost this post. Tag a friend, tag an enemy, even tag a Reaver. Give us some ‘quantifiable analytics’ that we can use to convince folks that this is something people want.”
As soon as fans saw Nathan’s plea to help revive Firefly, they immediately rallied with support.
“This news is the only thing keeping me going in 2026 ,” one person wrote in the comments. “YOU CAN’T. STOP. THE. SIGNAL. BRING OUR CREW BACK!” another shouted. “Let’s do this! We can do the impossible, and that makes us mighty,” a different follower added.
Now, should an animated Firefly series officially premiere on television, Deadline reported that it will be produced through Nathan’s production company, Collision33, in partnership with 20th Television Animation. And as Nathan explained to the outlet, the idea of reprising Mal has always been on his mind since the show was cancelled more than two decades ago.
“I have never met a fan of Firefly—be it at a convention on a bus or at an airport or walking down the street getting ice cream—who has ever not said to me, ‘Is there going to be more?’” he said. “In the zeitgeist of my experience, it’s always been ever-present. So, here I am at this stage of my career, and I’m diversifying with a production company and trying to make TV shows, and this is a show that was extremely meaningful for me. It was an incredible part of my life. It built the foundations of my career.”
We’ll be sure to keep our fingers crossed for this!
