Investigators looking into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance have debunked the theory that it was a burglary gone wrong.

The 84-year-old was taken from her Tucson home on early February 1, and she was reported missing after failng to show up to a friend’s home for a worship service. A search and resuce team was immediately dispatched, but homicide investigators were also called onto the case. Nancy was not immediately found, but the state of her home caused investigators to label it a crime scene. The FBI, who released crucial information about the case, was also deployed to aid the local sheriffs department.

The nature of her disappearance was investigated from all angles, according to law enforcement, including from a potential theory that she was held at ransom. Law enforcement insiders recently claimed the plan might not have been as complex initially, speculating it was simply a burglarly gone wrong — a theory swiftly debunked by Sheriff Chris Nanos, who is leading the investigation. It comes after an ex-FBI agent revealed the hidden codeword that Savannah used in her message to the kidnappers.

On February 15, a source told Arizona Family that Savannah Guthrie’s mother might still be alive. In fact, multiple experts allegedly claimed that doorbell footage did not seem to indicate the abduction was planned.

According to Nanos, the signs still point to a kidnapping, just with an unspecified motive.

Het told the Daily Mail, “This is somebody who’s disappeared from the face of the earth, and now we have a camera that says here’s the person who did this.”

Nanos further claimed that footage is what leads him to continue pursuing the abduction case as a kidnapping rather than a botched break in. “The motivation for it is where we get stuck, right? Is it for money? I mean, we had the one demand where they asked for money. But is it really for money, or is it for revenge for something?” he added.

Following Nancy’s disappearances, ransom demand letters were sent in. They were delivered to a local CBS affiliate and TMZ, reportedly requesting $6 million in bitcoin. According to TMZ, the demand letter included details that were not immediately released to the public in order to help verify the authenticity of the request.

Further, it included two deadlines — both of which have passed without the return of Nancy. While Savannah, alongside her kidnappers, said on camera that they were willing to pay, there was no movement on the bitcoin account.

There were other demand letters, too, including from imposter kidnappers. Law enforcement even arrested and charged one individual who sent in a ransom request, lying about their involvement with the case.

Police are investigating the case beyond just an isolated, botched incident. They’ve requested the community send in any footage they have of the area during the month proceeding the break in.
