It’s impossible to quantify the grief that comes with losing a loved one, and in the aftermath, everyone grieves in their own way. Some people prefer solitude. Some prefer distraction. And there really isn’t one tried and true way to grieve. Everyone does the best they can as they try to move forward. So, how has Martin Short been coping with the tragic death of his daughter, Katherine?

Katherine Hartley Short was found dead in her home in the Hollywood Hills on February 23, from what law enforcement sources described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. And Short is reportedly going through a rough time in the wake of it. “Martin adored Katherine. The sun rose and set with her, so naturally, he’s in turmoil right now and finding it almost impossible to process,” a source told RadarOnline.

“He knew she was going through a hard time mentally, but not to this extent. It’s just shocking and unfathomable to him on every level and has taken a wrecking ball to his whole world.”

Katherine was a clinical social worker who specialized in adoption issues, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, grief and loss, suicidality, and relationship difficulties. She had reportedly struggled with her own mental health issues for years, at one point acquiring a service dog to help her. In her since-deleted professional website, she shared a photo and bio of her service dog, Joni, named after singer Joni Mitchell.

“Joni is my incredible service dog, who has been assisting me with my own struggles with mental illness for the past 5 years,” the website read. “Joni will often be in the office with me, cuddled up on her bed,” Katherine also wrote. “She is an absolute sweetheart and just LOVES people, so don’t be surprised if she greets you with a smile, a wagging tail…and maybe even a kiss.”

Reports indicate Short is trying to grieve in private at such a delicate time. About a month before Katherine’s death, Catherine O’Hara, a longtime friend of Short, passed away as well.

“It’s not been easy for the many folks who know and love Martin to be by his side or help him out,” the source continued. “Right now, he’s shutting himself away and trying to handle the practical arrangements, while being there for Katherine’s two adopted brothers.”

Even Meryl Streep, Short’s rumored partner, is reportedly having a hard time comforting him right now. “Even Meryl is having a hard time getting through to Martin right now, and suffice to say, she’s very concerned. She loves Martin unconditionally, and it’s just devastating to see him so shattered and broken.”

A rep for Martin Short released a statement shortly after Katherine’s death, which read, “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss, and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
