Lindsay Lohan was the wild child of the early 2000s, photographed staggering out of clubs, in and out of rehab and with a string of legal problems and arrests. Indeed, 2015 was the first time in eight years she was probation-free. Now 39 and a mom of one, the former child star lives in Dubai with husband Bader Shammas, where she recently sat down with Vogue Arabia to look at her troubled past. “It was all so overwhelming and consuming,” she told Vogue Arabia, adding, “I was young and wanted to be in L.A.”

Working since she began modeling at age 3, Lindsay found success in family-friendly fare like The Parent Trap. But as she aged — and her parents, Michael and his ex-wife Dina Lohan, faced their own legal issues — she was left to her own devices. “While it was a lot of fun, it was hard when I was young. It was a double-edged sword,” she told the mag. “Now I look back and wonder, ‘Why didn’t anyone just go and take me out of there, protect me more?’ You don’t know how to do that yourself when you’re a teenager.”
Slowly, she’s been working her way back. Next up, Hulu’s Count My Lies, shooting in her native NYC. “I’m looking forward to it.”
