ST. LOUIS – Kevin Nealon has enjoyed a long, successful comedy career, but the St. Louis native of Saturday Night Live fame says there’s still one honor he wants more than any other: A star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
Nealon, who now lives in Los Angeles, returned to St. Louis this weekend for a three-night special at the Helium Comedy Club. He also stopped by FOX 2’s studios Friday morning.
With his signature dry-wit humor in full force, Nealon used both stops to share his hopes of one day earning a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
“A lot of people don’t know this is where I was born, St. Louis,” said Nealon on FOX 2’s Studio STL program. “And that’s because I don’t have my star on The [Delmar] Loop. I’ve heard my star is not on the Loop. Jon Hamm’s is there. John Goodman. Chuck Berry. Kevin Nealon? No. Don’t see a star anywhere.”
To his first point, Nealon only lived in St. Louis for a brief part of his childhood. A few months after he was born, shortly after his father finished his studies at St. Louis University, Nealon and his family moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut. He also spent several years living in Germany before returning to the East Coast, making occasional visits to St. Louis over the years.
The St. Louis Walk of Fame, located on the Delmar Loop, features more than 160 stars, honoring individuals with local ties who have made significant contributions on St. Louis and American culture. According to the Walk of Fame’s website, “Its mission is to encourage pride in the community and career inspiration in individuals.”
Anyone may submit a nomination to the St. Louis Walk of Fame office by mail, providing the nominee’s name, date, place of birth and a brief biography. From there, a selection committee of 120 St. Louisans review nominations annually and vote on nominations.
All that considered, Nealon is hopeful for a spot and considers himself a St. Louisan at heart.
“It is good to be back here,” said Nealon. “I’m proud that St. Louis is my home.”
He followed those remarks on FOX 2 with an anecdote highlighting his personal ties to St. Louis baseball history.
“I’ve been friends with [former Cardinals manager] Tony La Russa for a long time,” said Nealon. “And when I was born at Incarnate Word Hospital – it’s not around anymore – they would give a contract for you to come and try out for the St. Louis Browns, as they were called at the time. So when you became 18, you could come out and do a walk-on tryout for the club.”
The Browns relocated and became MLB’s Baltimore Orioles soon after Nealon was born, but nonetheless, the story remains one his favorite St. Louis connections.
FOX 2 also learned about Nealon’s passion for golf, highlighted by his role as outspoken golfer Gary Potter in Happy Gilmore and Happy Gilmore 2.
“It was exciting,” said Nealon. “In Happy Gilmore 2, I did a scene with [PGA golfer Scottie] Scheffler. And we did that for like a half-hour rehearsing it. And all of these professional golfers were there. And I like to golf, [even though] I don’t golf a lot.”
Nealon’s dry, deadpan comedy style helped define a memorable era of Saturday Night Live in the 1980s and 1990s, featured in recurring roles such as the “Weekend Update” anchor, Mr. Depth Perception and Subliminal Message Man. He also has a long history in films with Hollywood sensation Adam Sandler, including both Happy Gilmore movies, The Wedding Singer, Anger Management and Just Go With It.
Nealon was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 1987, along with two Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2007 and 2009 for his role as Doug Wilson on Showtime TV drama “Weeds.”
Nealon is still very active in his professional career. Among his recent ventures…
-
He produced a 2025 Apple TV documentary called “Come See Me in the Good Light” about American poet and activist Andrea Gibson. It received a 2026 Academy Award nomination for “Best Documentary Feature.”
-
He frequently creates YouTube shorts and podcasts called “Hiking With Kevin.” It consists of candid conversations with celebrities and special guests on everyday life topics.
