Michael Jackson died in June 2009 at age 50, and an autopsy showed the true state of his health and appearance after years of cosmetic surgery and private medical struggles

Shocking findings from Michael Jackson’s autopsy unveiled the reality of his physical condition hidden beneath cosmetics, hairpieces and artificial enhancements.

The performer was intensely secretive about his medical struggles and barred physicians from examining particular areas of his body. Yet his extensive history of aesthetic procedures and undisclosed health complications came to light following his passing in June 2009. The polarizing icon passed away at age 50 in his Los Angeles residence from an excess of the surgical anesthetic Propofol. His death was subsequently classified as a homicide, with his private doctor, Dr Conrad Murray, found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

In the aftermath of his June 2009 death, a post-mortem examination was performed which cast a disturbing spotlight on his cosmetic procedures and health ailments.

After numerous surgeries, dependency on prescribed medications and what appeared to be a struggle with anorexia, Jackson, who features in Channel 4’s new documentary Michael Jackson: The Trial, weighed just 122 lbs at the time of his death. By comparison, the typical weight for an American male is 200 lbs.

His stomach contained only partially digested tablets after he allegedly subsisted on merely one small meal daily. The complete toxicology analysis documented a mixture of propofol and benzodiazepines, which resulted in his fatal cardiac arrest. Jackson bore injection marks across his arms, thought to have resulted from the substances he was administering to combat severe insomnia.

His hips, thighs, and shoulders bore numerous puncture marks, believed to be from painkiller injections. Visible signs of his many cosmetic surgeries were also evident, including two surgical scars behind his ears and two more on either side of his nostrils.

Doctors deduced that the multitude of scars at the base of his neck and on his arms and wrist were remnants of his various procedures.

In addition to the surgery scars, it was disclosed that Jackson had undergone peculiar cosmetic procedures, such as having his lips tattooed pink. His eyebrows were black tattoos, and the front of his scalp was oddly tattooed black to blend with his hairline.

Simultaneously, the superstar’s knees and shins were inexplicably bruised, and he had cuts on his back, indicating a recent fall he had. More unsettlingly, his wavy, shoulder-length hair was discovered to be a wig that had been glued onto his head.

Underneath the wig, Jackson was entirely bald except for patches of ‘peach fuzz’ on his scarred scalp. “He was skin and bone, his hair had fallen out, and he had been eating nothing but pills when he died,” a source close to the singer revealed to The Sun.

“Injection marks all over his body and the disfigurement caused by years of plastic surgery show he’d been in terminal decline for some years.”

Jackson is thought to have begun wearing a wig following an incident in 1984 when his hair ignited during the filming of a Pepsi commercial, resulting in second and third degree burns. The shoot at LA’s Shrine Auditorium involved him dancing down a short staircase while fireworks were set off around him.

However, a technical malfunction during the sixth take caused the pyrotechnics to detonate prematurely, sending sparks onto Jackson’s heavily gelled hair, which then caught fire. The star was taken away on a stretcher, with a bald, scorched area above his left ear clearly visible.

Many have suggested that this accident marked the start of the singer’s painkiller dependency. He was given strong pain medication to manage the severe burns to his scalp and face, and subsequently developed an addiction to prescription drugs – a dependence that would eventually prove fatal. His brother Tito previously told the Mirror: “He had been taking pain medicine because of the burns and evidently he got some kind of addiction from it.”

The autopsy also verified the truth behind years of conjecture about Jackson’s changing skin tone. He had consistently maintained that the transformation in his appearance was due to vitiligo, a skin condition that causes loss of pigmentation in patches.

His body did show areas of both light and dark skin, confirming he suffered from the condition. Dr. Christopher Rogers, who conducted the autopsy, stated: “Some areas of the skin appear light and others appear dark.”

The post-mortem examination also revealed evidence of frantic efforts to revive Jackson after he was discovered unresponsive at his residence. Bruising to the chest and fractured ribs were attributed to CPR performed by paramedics in their attempts to resuscitate him prior to his death being declared.

Jackson also had significant issues with his feet, which the superstar had consistently refused to allow medical professionals to examine. Given his legendary dance moves and revolutionary choreography, Michael Jackson’s feet were essential to his career. They introduced the world to the Moonwalk when Jackson debuted the move during a 1983 performance of Billie Jean on American television.

Fiercely protective of his privacy, Jackson would treat himself with pain medication instead of permitting experts to examine his famous feet. His signature socks served a purpose – Jackson was reportedly concealing the fact that his feet were severely misshapen.

He endured painful callouses and a fungal infection so extreme that it appeared his skin was deteriorating. In his 2016 memoir, This Is It, his disgraced doctor Dr Conrad Murray described Jackson’s feet, writing: “(They) were covered in callouses… and had an advanced chronic fungal infection. It turned out he always wore socks because he was so ashamed of the way his feet looked.

“I suggested he needed a podiatrist. A day after his feet were treated, he was amazed he could walk and dance without pain. Later I prescribed anti-fungal medications to clear the infection. It was a complete success. Meanwhile, I personally administered regular lotions and massages to remove the rough skin,” Murray explained. “The fact Michael’s feet, something critical to him, were in such poor condition was a sign not only had he neglected himself but those around him were not keeping a close eye on his wellbeing.”
