Grammy Award winner, internationally acclaimed composer and producer Lebo M, is not taking Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Mwanyenyeka’s utterances lightly.
The cultural custodian has formally instituted a $20 million lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Central District of California against Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Mwanyenyeka, following a series of alleged damaging misrepresentations, defamatory conduct, and unlawful commercial exploitation linked to the globally revered Royal Praise Chant, “Nants’ Ingonyama”.
The lawsuit stems from a viral social media video where Jonasi told hosts Godfrey and Akbar Gbajabiamila that the famous chant, “Nants’ Ingonyama,” translates to “Look, there is a lion, oh my God!”
Filed in Los Angeles, the legal action cites multiple causes, including: misleading representation (Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. §1125), defamation per se, trade libel, and tortious interference with prospective economic advantage.
“Nants’ Ingonyama” -a Royal Praise Chant (Imbongi, in metaphor) is most recognised for its use in the Disney blockbuster “The Lion King”.
Lebo M has argued that the chant is not a “viral catchphrase” but rather Praise Imbongi, a royal praise poetry rooted in Zulu and Xhosa traditions, making the comedian’s interpretation offensive and an act of cultural misappropriation.
“This is not merely a legal matter – it is a cultural correction. ‘Nants’ Ingonyama’ is not a punchline, nor a casual reference point for exploitation,” said Tshepo Mboni, Lebo M’s global spokesperson.
“It is a sacred Royal Praise Chant, rooted in African identity, spirituality, and storytelling. We are taking a firm and uncompromising stance against any form of misrepresentation, defamation, or unauthorised commercial use that undermines its significance and Lebo M’s legacy.”
