Gary Oldman has shared intimate details about his final Skype conversation with David Bowie days before the music legend’s death in 2016, revealing Bowie’s humor remained intact until the end

David Bowie passed away a decade ago today, on January 10th, 2016. In the days leading up to his death, while he was battling cancer, he spent what would unknowingly be his final moments with one of his closest friends, Gary Oldman.

Oldman revealed that during Bowie’s illness, they would frequently connect via Skype. The music icon spent his last days residing in New York, and every Sunday, he and the “Life On Mars” star would catch up over a video call, with Bowie updating the “Batman” actor on his health status.

Oldman recounted their final conversation, which took place shortly before Bowie succumbed to liver cancer. He described their last exchange as something very ‘on the nose’ for a rockstar.

According to Oldman, the last words from his dear friend were “so wonderfully David,” as Bowie struggled to end the video call.

Oldman recalled: “We were Skyping and you know when you want to disconnect with someone, sometimes you try and disconnect and you can’t and they keep coming back. So he’s pressing the button, and he said, ‘Alright, talk to you next week’ or whatever.

“And he went, ‘Go away, go away.’ And he pressed the button, and he went ‘f— off’, The Telegraph reports.

Bowie’s close friend provided further insight into the star’s later life, particularly when the world was rocked by the news of his death just two days after the release of his final album, “Blackstar. “

According to Oldman, Bowie handled his cancer diagnosis with “dignity, grace and humor,” and shared the news with him via email.

The actor described the conversation: “I’ve got some good news, I’ve got some bad news’, he wrote: ‘the bad news is I’ve got the big C’. And underneath he wrote, ‘The good news is I got my cheekbones back,’ which I thought was just really dark and really sweet and funny of him.”

Prior to their friendship, Oldman had long admired Bowie, despite his own legendary status, having portrayed figures like Winston Churchill and Sid Vicious.

The pair first crossed paths backstage at a theatrical production, but it took several years before the reality of their friendship truly sank in.

During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, he shared a memory from when the famous duo were vacationing on a yacht near Mustique.

As he made his way through the vessel before heading ashore for dinner and sightseeing, he came across Bowie casually dressed in shorts and barefoot, playing guitar and singing Space Oddity.

Bowie apparently glanced up and mentioned he was “just messing about”. That brief encounter marked the first moment he genuinely thought to himself, ‘You’re David Bowie. ‘ Even after years of friendship, the iconic rockstar’s presence still left him starstruck.
