Trending Now: This entertainment story covers the latest buzz, reactions, and updates surrounding Trending Now: 19 Chaotic “On Again, Off Again” Celeb Couples Who Just… Kept… Coming Back To Each Other – Fans React..
Celeb relationships are notoriously entertaining, especially those on-again, off-again couples. It’s like a constant guessing game of whether they’re together or not, which is fun for the average chronically online zillennial (me).
So because knowledge is power, here are some celeb couples we’re fairly certain broke up and got back together at least once — and stick around for Jennifer Lawrence, because I truly had no idea:
1. One of the most-discussed over the past few years is none other than Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan. Rumours started swirling that they broke up about a year after first being seen together in late 2023. And in August 2024, a source told People that they’re actually “on and off.”

Plus, Sabrina’s song “Please Please Please” alludes to her being embarrassed by a romantic partner that the internet assumes is Barry (and he was in the music video, too). Lyrics from that song include: “Heartbreak is one thing, my ego’s another / I beg you, don’t embarrass me, motherf*cker.” The couple officially split in late 2024, according to an insider who told People.

2. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck go way back. They initially got engaged in 2002, but called it quits in 2004 after postponing their wedding the year before. In a statement they released in 2003, Ben and Jen addressed their reasoning for delaying the wedding: “Due to the excessive media attention surrounding our wedding, we have decided to postpone the date.” They stayed friends after that, and then years later, in 2021, they got back together.

J.Lo and Ben got engaged again in April 2022 and married two months later. And they were a power couple once again for a few years, until boom: The news of their divorce came out on August 20, 2024. And it totally shook us all. They’ve been spotted together since then, but they’re reportedly just friends. Reflecting on filing for divorce from Ben, J.Lo said in an Oct. 2024 interview, “I think to myself, ‘****, that is exactly what I needed. Thank you, God. I’m sorry it took me so long.”

3. If you’re curious who Taylor Swift wrote the heart-wrenching breakup banger “All Too Well” about, it’s suspected to be Jake Gyllenhaal. Taylor and Jake first sparked dating rumours in October 2010 and spent a few months together. But after he allegedly didn’t show up at her birthday party (listen to “The Moment I Knew,” people!), they split in early January 2011.

But later that same month, people spotted them having dinner together, and they did chat at an Oscars after-party in February 2011. That paired with several songs on Taylor’s album Red makes us think this couple was on-again, off-again — including (supposedly) the iconic anthem “We Are Never Getting Back Together.” This was a legendary one for the history books.

4. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are a truly iconic celeb couple. They started dating way back in 2009 during filming for The Last Song, and broke up in 2010. But they got back together only one month later, and broke up a second time two months after that, in November 2010. “Their on- and off-again relationship is currently off,” a source reported at the time.

But then! Miley and Liam surprised us all by getting engaged in 2012, and called it off in 2013 after months of rumours. “They don’t want to get married until they figure out their problems,” a source told People that year during all the speculation about the status of their relationship. Fast forward a couple years, and they got engaged AGAIN in 2016 before getting married in 2018. Finally, they got divorced in 2019. (Side note, you should listen to “Flowers,” which Miley allegedly wrote about Liam.)

5. Buckle up for this one. We’re pretty sure Cardi B and Offset got together around 2016, but they kept it low-key for awhile before Cardi confirmed she was single in 2017. So people assumed they broke it off at that point. They got engaged that same year, though, before cheating allegations on Offset spread in December 2017. It gets a bit confusing from here, though… In 2018, we weren’t sure where they stood. But we do know they ended things again in 2018, then got back together. Cardi filed for divorce in 2020, but they called off the divorce and later gave birth to their second child.

At this point, they were together for awhile (amidst more cheating rumours), but we learned Cardi was again single in 2023. We think they got back together earlier in 2024, before filing for divorce yet again that summer (and revealing she was pregnant with their third child one day later). Since then, they’ve called each other out, both publicly dissing the other. For one, Cardi B said on an Instagram Live: “I don’t regret my kids. You a good daddy. You aight. I don’t regret none of them. … But **** you. I regret you. I’m too good for you.”

6. Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green met in 2004 and got engaged two years later. After calling off the engagement, they pulled an uno reverse and got engaged a second time in June 2010. They got married just eight days after this engagement, then had their first child together in 2012, and their second child in 2014.

But here’s where things get even messier: Megan filed for divorce from Brian in 2015 and, after being split up for just under a year, they started hanging out again and got pregnant again in 2016. A year later, Brian addressed the split on his podcast, saying, “Some people look at divorce or things not working as like a disappointment and it’s not. The fact that it worked at all is a positive.” They filed for divorce again in 2020, and it was finalized two years later.

7. And since we’re talking about Megan Fox, we have to discuss Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly’s (admittedly confusing) relationship. They started dating in 2020 after meeting on the set of Midnight in the Switchgrass, and got engaged in 2022. Things appeared to get rocky for them in 2023, with reports saying they were “trying to work things out,” but they ended up getting back together.

In November 2024, they announced they were pregnant with their first child, but only a month later, rumours of their breakup surfaced. Their daughter was born in March 2025, and they’ve been coparenting since then. Reports from January 2026 suggested that their relationship is not romantic, but that “she’s not closed [off] to it” for the future.

8. Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma started as an on-again, off-again relationship. Koma, who is a singer and producer, met Hilary while working on her music in 2013, but they didn’t officially get together publicly until January 2017. Two months later, they split, only to rekindle things a few months after that. “Him being gone on tour was the main reason things didn’t work out the first time around, so now that he’s back, they picked up right where they left off,” a source told E! News at the time. By the end of 2017, they were back together.

They’ve been going strong ever since then, and now have three kids together. Hilary has since opened up about their on-again, off-again status. “It’s going so great,” she said. “I mean, this is the third time that we’ve dated.” She also noted that “timing is such a big deal” when it comes to relationships. Can’t argue with that! Look at these cuties!

9. How could I not mention Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott? We first saw this couple publicly linked in April 2017, and they got pregnant later that same year. They had their first child, Stormi, in 2018. In 2019, cheating allegations against Travis swirled online, although Travis denied these rumours. They announced they’d be taking a break a few months later, with a source citing “some trust issues” and “the stress of their lifestyles.”

After a couple years of being spotted with other people, and questions of where their relationship stood, they announced they were expecting again in 2021, and we got the news that they broke up for good in 2023. We all know Kylie is super-serious with Timothée Chalamet now, although she and Travis are apparently civil as they co-parent their two kids. But interestingly, Travis seemingly dissed Timothée in his 2023 song “Meltdown” with this lyric: “Chocolate AP and chocolate the Vs (Vs), got the Willy Wonka factory (Vs) / Burn a athlete like it’s calories, find another flame hot as me, *****.”

10. Speaking of the Kardashians, how could we forget about Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick? Their relationship began in 2007 and they split up a year later after some cheating allegations on Scott. The story is that Kourtney saw some suspect text messages on Scott’s phone to another contact named “my wife.” In response, she said, “I cannot believe Scott could have cheated on me. I’m sick to my stomach that this could have happened.” But they got back together and had their first child in 2009.

And that’s not all. They had another breakup-and-quick-makeup in 2010, with Kourtney telling him “I can’t do this anymore” in an episode of Kourtney & Kim Take Miami. Then, they had their second and third children in 2012 and 2014 respectively, and broke up a third time in 2015. Finally, they got back together in 2016, but only for a little bit — and they lived happily never after.

11. Obviously nobody forgot about Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. As a Gen Z’er, this is my Roman empire. But you may not recall that these two dated on and off for a whopping EIGHT YEARS. Specifically, Justin and Selena first started dating in 2009 and called it off in 2014, then again later that same year, from June to October 2014.

Finally, they rekindled things from 2017–2018, and they allegedly wrote several songs about each other in the process — ever heard the song “Sorry”? What about the heart-wrenching “Lose You To Love Me”? I could go on. One noteworthy lyric from the latter that seemingly references Justin moving on following their final breakup is: “In two months you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it / In the thick of healing.” Now, they’re both married, Justin to Hailey Bieber and Selena to Benny Blanco.

12. Time to talk about a relationship that stirred up a lot of discussion, not necessarily for being on-and-off, but mainly due to the age gap: Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama. They met when Demi was 17 and Wilmer was 29 but, according to Demi at the time, they didn’t start dating until she was 18. Their relationship spanned from 2010 to 2016, but it began with an on-and-off patch from November 2010 until February 2013.

Most interestingly, though, in 2022, Demi released a song called “29” (which is a banger), allegedly about the relationship. She starts the chorus with a chilling lyric: “Finally 29 / Funny, just like you were you at the time / Thought it was a teenage dream, just a fantasy / but was it yours or was it mine? 17, 29.”

13. I bet you’re unaware of this one, but Pink and Carey Hart were actually on-and-off. Pink met racer Carey Hart in 2001, and they dated for two years before splitting up. They celebrated their engagement in 2005 and got married in 2006, but broke it off again in 2008. On their 2008 split, Pink reportedly wrote on her website, “This breakup is not about cheating, anger, or fighting. I know it sounds like cliché bullsh*t, but we are best friends, and we will continue to be.”

Pink opened up about getting marriage counselling with Carey, and they were back together in 2010. And this one actually has a happy ending! They now have 2 kids together, and they’ll celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary in January. There were claims that they separated in February 2026, which Pink swiftly denied.

14. Although you may not have been alive when this tea was piping hot, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton might just be THE most famous celeb couple of all time. (Burton to this Taylor!) Liz and **** met in 1963 and were both married to other people at the time, but starting having an affair that had the entire world in a frenzy. They both got divorced and instead married each other in 1964.

After a tense relationship, they got divorced in 1974. But they got married a second time pretty quickly after that, and even adopted a daughter together. Alas, their second marriage didn’t last either, and they got divorced again in 1976. Get this, though: Liz got married a whopping EIGHT times in her life, two of those being after her relationship with **** ended for good.

15. I’m sure you remember the scandals that surrounded Gigi Hadid and Zayn, but let’s go through it. They were first seen together in November 2015, and they were together for awhile before breakup rumours spread in June 2016. Zayn and Gigi were together for awhile after that, but they both posted breakup statements in March 2018. A month later they were seen kissing, although a source clarified they were not back together… But they DID get back together in mid-2018 and split up in 2019.

They were together again in 2020, and had their first child that same year. But of course, the infamous conflict between Zayn and Gigi’s mom Yolanda made big news in October 2021, where reports surfaced that Yolanda accused Zayn of striking her. “This was and still should be a private matter,” Zayn responded in a statement he posted on X. Anyway, amidst all of this, Gigi and Zayn had split up again. They’ve been co-parenting their daughter since the big 2021 drama unfolded.

16. Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are a story for the ages. They met and started dating in early 2016 (remember that viral naked paddleboarding date?); they seemed to get serious pretty quick, but broke up after a year of dating. Years later, in a Call Her Daddy episode, Katy addressed this split; she said, “We weren’t really in it from day one,” noting that they had different intentions in the relationship. They remained friends after this breakup, and then were back together in 2018.
Dave M. Benett / Getty Images
And it appeared to last this time, because in 2019, they got engaged, and moved in together shortly afterward. Then, in March 2020, they announced they were postponing their wedding because of COVID, and they gave birth to their daughter in 2021. But the couple never got married after all, splitting up in 2025. “[They had] too much going on in their lives, which makes it hard to find time for each other and iron out disagreements,” a source told People following their final breakup. “When they don’t communicate properly, their relationship dips to a low level.”
Phillip Faraone / Getty Images
17. I had no clue Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult even dated, let alone had an on-again, off-again relationship, but here we are! They got together in 2010 on the set of X-Men: First Class, and dated until January 2013, with sources citing that their breakup was “amicable.” They started dating again later in 2013, seemingly on set for the following X-Men movie.

But these two were done for good in 2014. The year after, Jen seemingly addressed the breakup, saying, “We broke up around the same time that I wrapped those movies. Being 24 was this whole year of, ‘Who am I without these movies? Who am I without this man?'” Since then, the two of them seem to be friendly. Jennifer is now married to Cooke Maroney, and Nicholas now has two kids with his partner Bryana (but fans suspect they may have a third).

18. Halsey and G-Eazy had a pretty interesting relationship, so let’s talk about it. They got together in 2017, and were known to pack on the PDA on red carpets. In July 2018, they were “taking some time apart,” as Halsey wrote on her Instagram Story. But a month later, they appeared to be back together.
Frazer Harrison / Getty Images
Halsey and G-Eazy even vacationed together in October that same year. But the month ended with a bang, because they were over again. “He was partying over the weekend, and girls were all over him. He didn’t care who saw,” an insider reported to People. And in 2019, Halsey, whose real name is Ashley, appeared to put G-Eazy on blast on Saturday Night Live by projecting the words “Ashley I cheated” behind her while she sang “Without Me.”
Presley Ann / Getty Images
19. Lastly, Khloe Kardshian and basketball player Tristan Thompson started dating in 2016. But rumours of Tristan cheating on Khloe suddenly emerged in April 2018, the exact same month they gave birth to their daughter. The cheating controversy continued in 2019, when Tristan was accused of cheating on Khloe yet again, this time with her best friend Jordyn Woods — and the status of their relationship seemed rocky.

In a now-famous tweet, Khloe wrote to Jordyn, “You ARE the reason my family broke up.” She also said, “Tristan is equally to blame but Tristan is the father of my child.” So it was pretty apparent they weren’t together anymore. They reportedly started dating again in 2020, only to split in 2021 — and a few months after their final breakup, we learned Tristan was expecting again…but this time with another woman. Finally, in 2022, Khloe announced she was pregnant with Tristan’s child via surrogacy (their second together).
