OGDENSBURG — A standoff between law enforcement and a suicidal person with a pistol Tuesday morning has ended with the person being sent to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The 1000 blocks of New York Avenue and Lake Street were blocked off by law enforcement dealing with what they called a “subject in crisis” that began at approximately 6 a.m. following a report of a suicidal person with a handgun in the 1000 block of New York Avenue.
“On arrival the subject was in fact in possession of a handgun and was experiencing a mental health crisis,” Ogdensburg police said in a statement.
City police said the immediate area was closed to the general public to allow for the “safety of the person in crisis, the police and the public at large.”
At approximately 10:30 a.m., city police reported that the subject in crisis fired a single gunshot. At the time of press release, the subject was in critical condition and was being transferred to Upstate University Hospital.
The subject’s name is not being released due to the nature of the call, police said.
City police were assisted by the state police, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Border Patrol, St. Lawrence County District Attorney, St. Lawrence County Office of Emergency Management, Ogdensburg Fire Department and the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad.
