Detective Vincent Riley’s sobriety was in major jeopardy on Law & Order
Upon his arrival in the squad in Season 23 of Law & Order, it didn’t take long for viewers to learn that the 2-7 detective harbored a troubled past. In Season 23’s “Turn the Page,” Riley was tasked with testifying against a suspect in one of his older cases, which brought details from his dark history at the NYPD into the light.
Before making his way to the 27th Precinct, Riley had been suspended for six months at his previous post for punching an NYPD captain after overhearing a rude comment about Lt. Kate Dixon (Camryn Manheim). An investigation into the altercation revealed that Riley had been drinking on the job. The detective was really struggling due to his father’s death at the time, leading Riley to develop a drinking problem, which culminated in a divorce after his wife took their two children and left.
Despite these troubling setbacks, Riley wasted no time emerging as one of the squad’s toughest recruits, appreciating Dixon for helping him get back on the NYPD beat. Detective Riley has been on a road toward redemption, focusing his energy on closing homicide cases and helping the steadfast A.D.A.s. However, after a criminal pursuit went south in Season 25’s “Fate’s Cruel Joke,” Riley found his sobriety in major jeopardy.

Vincent Riley tortured himself with guilt on Season 25 of Law & Order

After locking eyes with their potential assailant, Riley and his partner Detective Theo Walker (David Ajala) launched their chase with Walker on foot and Riley in the wailing squad car. After the perp took a turn down a path closed for construction, Riley ignored the signage and turned down the narrow road. Just as he narrowed in on the suspect, a contractor ran in front of Riley’s squad car. Riley rushed to the civilian’s side, gravely discovering he hadn’t heard the sirens due to wearing noise-cancelling headphones.
The perp was soon lost to the wind as a shellshocked Riley told Lt. Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney) about the incident, confirming he’d seen the road closure signs before turning down the alley. After Brady nervously asked if the suspect was carrying a firearm — justifying the ignored signage under NYPD protocol — Walker interrupted to confirm that the assailant had been carrying a weapon. Riley quickly agreed.

It was tragic, but if that was truly the case, Brady determined Riley had operated within protocol. At the hospital, Riley was horrified after learning the contractor’s condition wasn’t looking good. Even after zoning back in on the investigation, Riley remained haunted by the accident back at home with his wife and kids.
Later, despite being called to testify, Riley failed to arrive in court. Following this troubling development, Riley visited the precinct in a manic fit, revealing that the contractor had been pronounced brain dead and taken off life support. To make matters more heartbreaking, Riley had clearly been drinking.
After A.D.A. Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) pulled him into the office to pull his friend together, Riley confessed that he hadn’t seen the fleeing suspect carrying a firearm, so he shouldn’t have been in the alley. He lied for fear of losing his career. Price cautioned Riley to can it — he’s a lawyer, not a priest. But it was enough for Riley to snap back to reality. Everything he’d done to rebuild his reputation was at risk, and he needed to stay focused on delivering justice.
In the final moments of the episode, Riley attended an AA meeting, clearly abiding by his wife’s loving advice and attempting to move on from the harrowing tragedy.
