Case Explained:This article breaks down the legal background, charges, and implications of Case Explained: Murder of lawyer threatens rule of law, says Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi – Legal Perspective
Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old lawyer in the Johannesburg CBD, describing the incident as a threat to South Africa’s constitutional order.
The woman was shot and killed on Monday near the corner of Fox and Joubert streets, close to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
According to the ministry, the victim was a legal practitioner attached to Sibanye-Stillwater’s legal team and was involved in a labour dispute at the time of her death.
Kubayi says she had learned of the killing “with shock” and denounced the violence.
“The justice system exists to provide lawful, fair, and structured mechanisms for resolving disputes. We urge all individuals and parties to reject violence and place their trust in legal processes and institutions,” said the minister.
Police have opened a murder investigation, but no arrests have been made.
Kubayi warned that such attacks undermine the country’s legal framework and democratic foundations.
“An attack of this nature undermines the rule of law and threatens the very foundation of our constitutional democracy. Legal practitioners play a critical role in ensuring access to justice, and their safety must be safeguarded at all times,” she said.
She added that violence, particularly against members of the legal profession, “will not be tolerated” and called on law enforcement to act swiftly.
“Violence against any person will not be tolerated, particularly when it targets members of the legal profession and results in loss of life.”
The minister also urged authorities to ensure accountability.
“Investigations are ongoing,” Kubayi noted, calling on police “to act swiftly and decisively to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, in line with due process.”
Meanwhile, tributes have begun pouring in for the slain woman, identified by her running club as Chinette Gallichan.
In a social media post, Run Zone Athletics Club expressed grief over her death, saying: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of the life of one of our members, Chinette Gallichan, you gone way too soon. We will miss you dearly.”
Kubayi extended her condolences to the victim’s family, colleagues and the broader legal fraternity affected by the tragedy.
