Case Explained:This article breaks down the legal background, charges, and implications of Case Explained: Legal teams sound off over change of venue motions in Shane Roper criminal case – Legal Perspective
ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Attorneys for both sides filed legal briefs Thursday on the site for the upcoming, unscheduled jury trial for former Minnesota State Patrol trooper Shane Roper.
Roper, 33, from Hayfield, is accused of criminal vehicular homicide, manslaughter, and other charges in the 2024 death of 18-year-old Olivia Flores.
Roper was on duty for the state patrol when the squad car he was driving crashed into a vehicle Flores was a passenger in near Rochester’s Apache Mall.
Citing pre-trial media coverage, Roper’s legal team wants the trial moved to Stearns County, or at the very least, bring in a jury from outside of Olmsted County.
Prosecutors are arguing the change of venue motions be denied. However, if granted by the judge, the state wants the trial kept in this judicial district and recommends holding the proceedings in Winona County.
A ruling is expected by Mar. 20, though a trial date has yet to be set.
