India is witnessing a sharp rise in cybercrime cases, with Karnataka emerging as the state reporting the highest number of cybercrime incidents, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Karnataka reports highest cybercrime cases

As per NCRB’s latest available figures, Karnataka recorded around 21,889 cybercrime cases, the highest in India.

The surge is largely attributed to Bengaluru’s status as India’s IT hub, where high internet penetration, digital transactions, and fintech activity create both opportunities and vulnerabilities for cybercriminals.

Notably, Bengaluru alone accounts for a significant portion of these cases, making it one of the most affected cities in the country.

Telangana and Uttar Pradesh among top states

Following Karnataka, Telangana reported approximately 18,236 cases, while Uttar Pradesh recorded around 10,794 cases, placing them second and third respectively.

Experts note that improved reporting mechanisms and increased awareness may also contribute to higher recorded numbers in these states.

Cybercrime rising rapidly across India

Cybercrime in India has been growing at an alarming pace, with cases increasing significantly over recent years.

Fraud-related offences dominate the landscape, accounting for a majority of cybercrime cases, followed by offences such as:

• Identity theft
• Online financial fraud
• Cyber extortion
• Sexual exploitation

The rise is closely linked to rapid digitisation, increased smartphone usage, and expansion of online financial services.

Other high-risk states

Apart from the top three, states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi also report high volumes of cybercrime, particularly in urban centres with strong digital ecosystems.

Some reports also indicate that Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh consistently rank among the most affected states in terms of total cybercrime complaints over time.
